MOROCCO
An Awakening of Color
An Artistic Journey Through Morocco
Original Art Inspired by Morocco’s Architecture, Culture, History, and Extraordinary Visual Character
Morocco is a country that engages the senses in ways that are difficult to describe. Its architecture, intricate decorative patterns, vibrant colors, historic neighborhoods, and extraordinary relationship with light create an environment unlike anywhere else.
My journey through Morocco introduced me to a remarkable combination of artistic influences. From the architectural grandeur of Casablanca to the character-filled streets of Tangier, I discovered a visual world where tradition, craftsmanship, history, and contemporary life come together.
What impressed me most was the richness of the visual experience. Color appears everywhere, from the details of traditional architecture to decorative surfaces, intricate geometric designs, and the surrounding landscapes.
For an artist, these experiences offer an extraordinary opportunity for creative exploration.
Casablanca — Architecture That Inspires
One of the most memorable experiences of my journey was visiting Casablanca and seeing the magnificent Hassan II Mosque.
Its extraordinary scale, remarkable craftsmanship, and breathtaking architectural details make it one of the most impressive structures I have encountered. Positioned along the Atlantic Ocean, the mosque creates a striking relationship between architecture, water, sky, and light.
The interior details are equally captivating. Intricate geometric patterns, elaborate ceilings, decorative surfaces, and carefully considered colors reveal an exceptional level of artistic craftsmanship.
I found myself looking beyond the overall structure and concentrating on the individual elements. The patterns, shapes, colors, and relationships between architectural details became a source of inspiration.
This experience influenced several original artistic interpretations, including Keys to a Moroccan Masterpiece, where the visual character of the Hassan II Mosque meets the expressive language of Picasso and the subtle suggestion of piano keys.
It is an example of how travel experiences can become something entirely different when translated through an individual artistic perspective.
Casablanca — A Symphony in Color
Casablanca also inspired a broader exploration of color and composition.
The city’s visual character, combined with the extraordinary architectural influences encountered throughout Morocco, encouraged me to experiment with relationships between color, movement, and form.
Casablanca — A Symphony in Color reflects this approach.
Rather than attempting to reproduce a particular location, the work captures the energy and emotional impression of Morocco through an original artistic composition.
For me, this is where travel and art become especially interesting. A photograph can preserve what was seen, but painting provides the freedom to interpret what was felt.
The Beauty of Moroccan Details
Morocco’s artistic identity is deeply connected to its decorative traditions.
Geometric patterns, mosaic tilework, carved architectural details, and carefully arranged colors demonstrate a remarkable understanding of visual balance and craftsmanship.
These details offer endless possibilities for an artist interested in texture, layered surfaces, and the interaction of color.
During my journey, I became particularly interested in the way individual patterns and colors could be interpreted outside their original architectural surroundings.
A decorative detail might become an abstract composition. A collection of colors might suggest movement. An architectural form might become the starting point for an entirely new visual expression.
These are the kinds of discoveries that continue to influence my work long after returning home.
Tangier — Where Cultures Meet
My Moroccan experience also extended to Tangier, a fascinating destination with its own distinctive character.
Its historic Medina, winding streets, architectural details, and extraordinary position overlooking the meeting of the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea create a remarkable atmosphere.
Tangier has long been influenced by different cultures and traditions. That mixture is reflected in its architecture, streets, and visual personality.
Walking through its older neighborhoods offered another opportunity to observe the relationship between history, color, and everyday life.
For me, these experiences reinforced an important part of my artistic approach: inspiration does not always come from a grand landmark. Sometimes it comes from a window, a doorway, a wall, or an unexpected combination of colors.
From Moroccan Inspiration to Original Art
My creative process begins with observation and photography, but the finished artwork takes its own direction.
I work with layered acrylics, color, texture, and artistic interpretation to develop original compositions that move beyond the initial inspiration.
The objective is not to reproduce a destination. It is to create an independent work that captures something of its atmosphere and character.
Each piece becomes a personal interpretation, influenced by the places encountered and the impressions that remain.
With more than five decades of artistic experience and a Fine Arts education, I continue to explore new ways of translating visual experiences into original work.

An Invitation to Experience Morocco Through Art
Some destinations stay with us because of what we see. Others remain because of how they make us feel.
