Between the Black and the White

For more than five decades I have explored color as a language of emotion. Color has allowed me to celebrate life, memory, music, travel, architecture, cigars, bourbon, and the countless moments that shape our personal stories. Yet every artist eventually arrives at a place where color no longer provides the answer. Instead, simplicity becomes the destination.

Between the Black and the White represents that destination.

This collection intentionally removes every distraction. There are no vibrant reds competing for attention, no blues suggesting calm, and no golds implying luxury. What remains is the most honest conversation an artist can have—with the canvas, with the viewer, and ultimately with himself.

Black and white are often described as opposites, but they have never felt that way to me. They exist because of one another. Light defines darkness, and darkness gives meaning to light. Without one, the other loses its identity. Together they create tension, rhythm, balance, and movement.

That same relationship exists throughout our lives.

We experience certainty and doubt.

Success and failure.

Hope and disappointment.

Beginnings and endings.

None of us live entirely in darkness or completely in light. We spend our lives navigating the extraordinary space between them.

That is where these paintings were born.

Every brushstroke represents a decision rather than decoration. Every layer was allowed to evolve naturally, creating textures that reveal themselves over time. Some passages appear bold and confident, while others almost disappear into silence. Like life itself, not every answer is meant to be immediately visible.

Collectors often ask me what they are supposed to see in an abstract painting.

My answer has never changed.

You are not looking for my story.

You are discovering your own.

Abstract art succeeds when it becomes a mirror instead of a window. Rather than showing a recognizable landscape or familiar object, it reflects personal experiences back to the viewer. Every collector brings different memories, emotions, victories, and losses to the work, making every interpretation equally authentic.

That is especially true within Between the Black and the White.

Some people will see architecture.

Others will discover music.

Some will recognize conflict.

Others will find peace.

None of those interpretations are wrong because the painting is completed not by the artist, but by the person willing to spend time standing in front of it.

This series was also an exercise in restraint.

In today’s world we are surrounded by endless noise—notifications, opinions, advertisements, headlines, and distractions competing for our attention. Silence has become increasingly rare.

These paintings intentionally create that silence.

The absence of color invites the viewer to slow down. Texture replaces spectacle. Composition replaces decoration. Negative space becomes just as important as the marks themselves. The work asks nothing more than that you pause for a moment and simply observe.

Collectors often tell me that the paintings seem different every time they walk past them.

That is exactly the point.

Great abstract art evolves alongside the person living with it. A painting should not reveal everything during the first viewing. It should continue offering new conversations for years, changing with different lighting, different surroundings, and different chapters of life.

This trilogy was never intended to provide answers.

It was created to encourage reflection.

As an artist, I have learned that the most meaningful moments rarely exist at life’s extremes. Growth happens between certainty and uncertainty. Relationships develop between strangers. Ideas emerge between questions and answers. Every meaningful journey unfolds in the space between where we began and where we hope to arrive.

That philosophy lives within every canvas in this collection.

Between the Black and the White is not simply a study of contrast.

It is a meditation on balance.

It is a reminder that beauty often exists in simplicity.

It is an invitation to slow down long enough to discover something personal within the layers.

Perhaps that is why black and white have remained timeless throughout the history of art. They are not limited by trends or fashion. They belong equally in contemporary architecture, traditional interiors, corporate collections, and private homes because they communicate through emotion rather than decoration.

My hope is that each collector who lives with one of these works discovers something different over time. A new texture. A new memory. A different interpretation. A quieter conversation.

Because in the end, these paintings are not about black.

They are not about white.

They are about everything that happens between them.

And perhaps that is where all of our stories are truly written.
