There is a point where the visible world seems to meet the unknown—a distant line where sky, water, light, and imagination become one. That place is the horizon. We can see it, but we can never quite reach it. It continually invites us forward, encouraging us to wonder what might exist beyond what we already know. Emerald Dreams Beyond the Horizon is an abstract mixed-media exploration of that feeling.

The artwork is built around the richness and energy of emerald, a color that naturally evokes nature, water, growth, renewal, and a sense of quiet luxury. Within this composition, emerald becomes more than a color choice. It becomes an emotional landscape—a way of expressing possibility, movement, imagination, and the anticipation of something just beyond our view.

I wanted this work to feel like a journey rather than a destination.

There is no single location represented in Emerald Dreams Beyond the Horizon. Instead, the artwork creates an environment for the imagination. Depending on how you approach it, the composition may suggest distant water, a shoreline, reflected light, atmospheric clouds, foliage, or an entirely imagined world. Forms appear to move through one another, while layers of color create a sense of depth that encourages the eye to travel across the surface.

That freedom of interpretation is an essential part of my approach to abstract art.

I don’t want to tell the viewer exactly what they are seeing. I want to give them enough visual information to begin their own journey. Once that happens, the artwork becomes personal. What one person sees as a distant horizon may remind another person of a place they once visited, a dream they once had, or a future they are still imagining.

The mixed-media process allows me to create this sense of discovery through layers.

I combine original photography, exhibition-quality canvas, acrylic paints, glazing, texture, and subtle shimmer to build the surface. Photography provides fragments of reality, while paint and glazing allow those fragments to be transformed. Some photographic elements remain visible; others become partially concealed beneath subsequent layers. Acrylic paint introduces color, movement, and gesture. Glazing creates transparency, allowing earlier stages of the artwork to remain present beneath the surface.

Texture adds another physical dimension.

And then there is shimmer.

Subtle areas of shimmer catch the light as the viewer moves around the artwork, creating moments when the surface seems to change. What appears quiet in one moment can become more luminous in another. It is a small but important part of the experience because light is constantly changing—and so is the way we see.

That is one of the reasons I enjoy creating artwork in layers.

A painting does not have to reveal everything immediately.

Sometimes the most interesting discoveries are the ones that take time.

From a distance, Emerald Dreams Beyond the Horizon presents itself as a strong contemporary abstract composition. The emerald palette immediately establishes a sense of richness and atmosphere. As you move closer, the surface becomes more complex. Photographic fragments, painted passages, glazing, texture, and subtle shifts in color begin to reveal themselves.

This relationship between distance and detail is important to me. I want the work to have an immediate presence when you first enter a room, but I also want it to continue rewarding you after you have lived with it.

The artwork can be interpreted in many ways, and I believe that is exactly how it should be. One viewer may experience the painting as a dreamlike seascape. Another may see a lush emerald landscape. Someone else may respond to the movement of the composition without seeing anything representational at all.

There is no wrong answer.

Abstract art gives the viewer permission to bring their own experiences into the work.

That is something I value deeply as an artist.

We all carry our own collection of images, memories, colors, places, and emotions. When we encounter a piece of abstract art, those experiences can become part of what we see. The artwork may trigger something that I never consciously intended—and that is not a failure of the artwork. It is part of its success.

It means the work has become personal.

My mixed-media process reflects that same philosophy. I begin with elements that have some connection to the real world, then layer, alter, obscure, reveal, and transform them until the original imagery becomes part of something new. The artwork evolves through the process, just as our own ideas evolve through experience.

The finished piece becomes a record of that transformation.
