The Royal Pause
Abstract Cigar Art
Color, Mood & Visual Palette
Rendered in a deep, refined palette that evokes the ritual of cigar and bourbon — think rich tobacco browns, warm caramels, burnished umber undertones, and hints of charcoal shadows — this work draws you into a sensory world. Light glints across the composition: subtle amber highlights catch like reflections on polished wood or the glow of aged bourbon, offering warmth and quiet drama. The subdued but indulgent color story is precisely calibrated for interiors steeped in sophistication — private cigar lounges, mahogany-clad libraries, offices, and refined living spaces where mood matters.
Texture, Surface, and Overpainting Process
This is not a flat print — the surface is alive. Through a meticulous overpainting technique using acrylics on high-quality exhibition canvas, select areas are hand-enhanced to produce raised passages of paint and nuanced transitions in depth. The result: a tactile, dynamic surface that evolves with ambient light, giving the piece a “living” quality that rewards close inspection. Each brush stroke is intentional; each passage yields subtle shadows and highlights depending on the viewer’s position and time of day, ensuring no two viewings feel exactly the same.
The process transforms what might begin as a fine-art print foundation into a hybrid original — a genuine one-of-a-kind work imbued with the physical presence and decisions of the artist.
Certificate of Authenticity (COA) & Provenance
Accompanying the piece is a Certificate of Authenticity, personally issued by the artist. The COA attests to:
-
Original creation by Michael John Valentine,
-
Inclusion in his Luxury (or Collector’s) Edition series,
-
Hand-overpainted finish rather than mass-produced print,
-
Artist’s signature and edition
This documentation is not mere formality — it ensures provenance, collectibility, and long-term value. The kind of detail and dedication to authenticity that serious collectors expect.
Artist Background, Experience & Studio Craft
Michael John Valentine brings decades of experience to this work. His career spans over 55 years — having begun formal art training at age ten at an art institute in Ohio, culminating in a B.F.A. from Kent State University.
Based in the greater Lake Norman area, with a studio and gallery in Cornelius, North Carolina, Valentine practices a mixed-media approach that combines photography, canvas and acrylics. Over time he has refined a unique process: from digital or photographic foundations to richly layered, hand-finished canvases that honor texture, nuance, and atmosphere.
This background — formal education, decades of hands-on practice, and a dedicated studio environment — underlines the seriousness, craft, and legacy embedded in each piece.
Collector’s Statement & Intent
This is not decorative art for passing interest — it is a piece meant for the connoisseur. The Davidoff Royal Cigar Art Abstract serves as a statement: of taste, restraint, and cultivated indulgence. Its presence commands a wall, defines a room’s mood, and carries the gravitas of tradition — tobacconist slow-burn rituals, bourbon evenings, and contemplative solitude.
Collectors who appreciate process, texture, rarity and ambiance will understand: this is about more than visual impact — it’s about ownership of an experience.
A meditation on restraint, ritual, and refined indulgence, The Royal Pause captures the suspended moment between flame and ash—where time slows and intention takes over. Rich tobacco tones, layered ambers, and deep shadowed neutrals create a visual cadence that feels both intimate and commanding. The palette is deliberate, echoing the warmth of aged wood, leather-bound libraries, and the quiet glow of a well-earned evening.
Through a meticulous overpainting process, the surface reveals subtle elevation and texture, allowing light to interact with the work throughout the day. These hand-applied layers transform the canvas from image to object—each brushstroke reinforcing depth, presence, and originality. No two surfaces resolve the same way, ensuring the piece remains visually engaging and unmistakably singular.
