Romeo & Juliet: The Distinguished Reserve

“I don’t paint to explain the world—I paint to remember how it feels.”

There is a certain romance in the ritual of a great cigar and a carefully poured bourbon. It is a moment that asks nothing of the outside world. The glass catches the light. Ice slowly transforms beneath the surface. A hand-rolled cigar rests nearby, waiting to be enjoyed. For a few quiet minutes, time seems to move differently.

Romeo & Juliet: The Distinguished Reserve captures that feeling through a rich, expressive composition inspired by one of the most recognizable names in the world of premium cigars. The Romeo y Julieta tradition brings with it a sense of history, craftsmanship, and refined enjoyment, while the presence of bourbon introduces warmth, character, and the unmistakable atmosphere of a private evening well spent.

This original artwork is more than a representation of a cigar and a glass. It is an exploration of mood.

The composition brings together the deep, earthy character of the cigar with the cool clarity of bourbon served over ice. Those contrasting elements create an engaging visual conversation—warm against cool, organic against reflective, tradition against contemporary abstraction. Color, texture, light, and layered acrylic paint work together to give the piece its distinctive visual depth.

The bourbon becomes almost another element of the painting rather than simply a beverage. Light moves through the glass and across the ice, creating highlights and reflections that contrast beautifully with the rich tones of the cigar. The result is a composition that feels both luxurious and intimate, recalling the atmosphere of an elegant cigar lounge or a private collector’s room.

Romeo & Julieta carries a particularly fitting name for an artwork centered on romance and indulgence. The legendary literary lovers have come to represent passion, while the cigar itself evokes a very different but equally timeless form of pleasure—the pleasure of slowing down and appreciating something created with care.

That connection inspired the title The Distinguished Reserve.

A reserve suggests something selected, preserved, and worthy of appreciation. It speaks to the idea of setting something aside for a special occasion rather than consuming it without thought. In that sense, the title reflects the spirit of the painting itself. This is artwork intended to be lived with, discovered over time, and appreciated for the atmosphere it brings into a room.

The painting also reflects my continuing fascination with the visual language surrounding cigars, bourbon, craftsmanship, and the rituals that accompany them. These subjects offer far more than recognizable objects. They provide opportunities to explore reflection, atmosphere, contrast, texture, and storytelling.

A cigar can suggest an evening before it ever begins. A glass of bourbon can suggest conversation, celebration, contemplation, or solitude. Ice can introduce a flash of light and a sense of movement into an otherwise grounded composition. Together, they create a visual story that extends well beyond the objects themselves.

As an artist, I am particularly interested in that moment when a recognizable subject begins to move toward something more expressive. The cigar remains identifiable. The glass remains recognizable. Yet color and paint allow the composition to become something beyond a straightforward still life.

Romeo & Juliet: The Distinguished Reserve is an original work created in my studio with acrylics on canvas. The painting combines representational elements with an expressive abstract sensibility, allowing the viewer to experience both the subject and the energy surrounding it.

The layered surfaces and variations in color give the painting a richness that changes with the surrounding light. From across the room, the composition establishes a strong, sophisticated presence. As the viewer moves closer, the details, paintwork, and textural transitions invite a more intimate examination.

That dual experience is important to me.

Fine art should command attention from a distance, but reward curiosity up close.

This piece would be particularly at home in a cigar lounge, bourbon room, library, study, home bar, or private collection. It can complement traditional surroundings while still bringing a contemporary artistic presence to the room. Its subject matter also makes it a natural addition to a collection built around fine cigars, spirits, travel, hospitality, or the appreciation of craftsmanship.

Ultimately, Romeo & Juliet: The Distinguished Reserve is about the pleasure of the moment.

It is about the first reflection of light across the bourbon. The cool edge of melting ice. The warmth and character of a premium cigar. The anticipation before the first draw. The quiet conversation that follows. Or perhaps simply the decision to sit back, pour a drink, light a cigar, and let the day disappear for a while.

Those moments may seem ordinary, but they are often the ones we remember.

In my retirement, I create art inspired by color, texture, and style. Each piece presents an opportunity to connect with the story being told on canvas.

Romeo & Juliet: The Distinguished Reserve is that story—a celebration of craftsmanship, atmosphere, romance, and the timeless pleasure of slowing down long enough to appreciate what is in front of us.

A distinguished cigar.

A carefully poured bourbon.

A moment worth remembering.

And a painting created to preserve the feeling.
