Elegance in Stone — Hassan II Mosque Casablanca
“There is a certain beauty in architecture that goes beyond its physical structure. It is found in the details, the craftsmanship, the harmony of shapes, and the emotions a place creates. My experience in Casablanca introduced me to a remarkable expression of all these qualities. I wanted to bring that impression home and give it a new life through art.”

The Beauty of Moroccan Architecture
Some architectural landmarks are impressive because of their size. Others capture attention through their history, craftsmanship, and extraordinary attention to detail. The Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, Morocco, manages to accomplish all of these things. Positioned along the Atlantic coastline, it is one of the most remarkable architectural achievements I encountered during my travels through Morocco.
Elegance in Stone — Hassan II Mosque is my artistic interpretation of this extraordinary landmark. Inspired by its distinctive architectural character, intricate decorative elements, and commanding presence, this work explores the relationship between structure, design, color, and artistic expression.
During my visit to Casablanca, I was particularly impressed by the visual richness of Moroccan architecture. The combination of traditional geometric patterns, elaborate ornamentation, carefully crafted surfaces, and monumental proportions creates an architectural language unlike anything encountered in ordinary surroundings.
What makes the Hassan II Mosque especially fascinating is the balance between grandeur and delicacy. Its enormous scale creates an immediate impression, while the intricate craftsmanship invites closer attention. It is this contrast that makes the building such a compelling subject for artistic interpretation.
A Landmark Built Through Extraordinary Craftsmanship
Completed in 1993, the Hassan II Mosque is among the largest mosques in the world. Its location beside the Atlantic Ocean makes its setting especially dramatic, with portions of the structure extending over the water.
The mosque’s towering minaret rises approximately 210 meters, making it one of the tallest religious structures in the world. Yet its impressive height tells only part of the story.
The building incorporates traditional Moroccan artistic techniques, including elaborate zellige mosaic tilework, carved plaster, decorative woodwork, and intricate geometric patterns. These details reflect generations of craftsmanship and a cultural appreciation for the relationship between architecture and decorative art.
I find this particularly inspiring as an artist. The ability to take individual elements and combine them into a unified visual experience is something that also exists in painting. Every shape, color, surface, and relationship contributes to the personality of the finished composition.
The Hassan II Mosque demonstrates how architecture can become an artistic statement in its own right.
Translating an Experience Into Art
My approach to creating art often begins with an impression rather than a predetermined outcome. I am interested in what captures my attention, how colors interact, and how individual visual elements can be transformed into something entirely different through the creative process.
Rather than attempting to create a conventional architectural reproduction, I wanted to explore the visual character of the mosque through my own artistic perspective.
The title, Elegance in Stone, reflects the qualities that made this landmark so memorable to me. Its architecture communicates strength and permanence, while its decorative details introduce movement, rhythm, and extraordinary visual complexity.
These contrasts offer endless possibilities for artistic interpretation.
My creative process allows me to move beyond the literal subject. I can explore the relationship between geometric structure and expressive color, between architectural precision and spontaneous artistic movement. The result is a composition influenced by a real destination but shaped by my own imagination and experience.
Color, Texture, and Mixed-Media Expression
Color is an essential part of my artistic vocabulary. I enjoy exploring how different tones establish relationships, create visual movement, and influence the way a composition is experienced.
Moroccan architecture offers a particularly rich source of inspiration. Its traditional decorative patterns, distinctive color combinations, and intricate surfaces create a visual environment that encourages experimentation.
My mixed-media approach provides an opportunity to develop these ideas through multiple layers of artistic expression. Combining original photographic imagery with exhibition-quality canvas and carefully applied acrylic paints allows me to create a finished work that moves beyond the appearance of a conventional photographic image.
The overpainting process is especially important. Through additional applications of acrylics, glazing, and subtle shimmer, I introduce individual artistic decisions that contribute to the character of the finished surface.
I enjoy allowing these elements to work together rather than compete for attention. The intention is to create visual depth, interest, and a sense of individuality while maintaining a connection to the original inspiration.
Each layer becomes part of a larger conversation between the subject, the materials, and the artist.
The Influence of Travel
My travels through Spain, Portugal, and Morocco provided an extraordinary collection of experiences and visual impressions. Each destination offered a different architectural personality, cultural influence, and opportunity for creative exploration.
Casablanca was particularly memorable because of the Hassan II Mosque and its remarkable relationship with the Atlantic Ocean.
Experiencing this landmark firsthand provided a perspective that goes beyond viewing photographs or reading about its construction. The scale, surrounding environment, craftsmanship, and atmosphere all contributed to the impression I carried home.
Travel has a way of introducing new possibilities into the creative process. It encourages an artist to look differently at familiar subjects and to recognize beauty in unexpected places.
For me, this artwork represents more than a visit to a famous Moroccan landmark. It represents the lasting influence of an experience and the freedom to interpret that experience through contemporary art.
An Original Work for the Discerning Collector
With a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and more than 55 years of creative experience, I continue to explore new ways of combining photography, acrylic painting, texture, and contemporary mixed-media techniques.
My philosophy is rooted in artistic exploration. I do not approach every composition with a fixed formula. Instead, I allow the subject, colors, materials, and creative process to influence the direction of the finished work.
Elegance in Stone — Hassan II Mosque offers collectors an opportunity to experience a distinctive interpretation of one of Morocco’s most celebrated architectural landmarks.
It is particularly appealing to those who appreciate architecture, international travel, cultural influences, and contemporary artistic expression. Its inspiration connects the enduring beauty of Moroccan craftsmanship with an individual creative vision.
Each overpainted signed canvas represents an additional artistic interpretation, developed through the application of acrylics and other carefully considered finishing techniques.
The Lasting Beauty of Casablanca
Some places remain in memory because of what they represent. Others remain because of how they make us feel.
The Hassan II Mosque offered me both. Its architectural presence, extraordinary craftsmanship, and setting along the Atlantic created an impression that continues to influence my creative thinking.
Through this artwork, I have attempted to capture that impression in a way that extends beyond a traditional architectural image.
Elegance in Stone is my personal tribute to Moroccan design, the artistry of architecture, and the inspiration that comes from experiencing remarkable places firsthand.
It is a celebration of craftsmanship translated into contemporary artistic expression, and a reminder that sometimes the most meaningful works of art begin with a journey.
