Visual & Textural Features
-
Color & Composition: The title “Today in Red” suggests a commanding interplay of red — likely dominant, rich, and variegated — perhaps layered with nuances, depth, and contrast that only a collector’s eye would fully appreciate. The painted splatter on the frame subtly echoes the intensity and movement of the canvas, unifying frame and image as a single experiential object.
-
Surface & Texture: The piece is “overpainted in select areas” with acrylic, giving raised, tactile brush- and palette-knife strokes that catch light and cast subtle shadows. The final surface is sealed with a glossy protective glaze, creating a lustrous cadence that both preserves and enhances the textures — a finish intended for longevity, preserving the integrity of thick layers and subtle ridges, so the piece endures as a centerpiece for decades.
-
Suspended Frame Architecture: The floating, suspended framing is more than decorative — it gives the canvas spatial separation from the wall, making the work seem to levitate. The visible hardware adds modern industrial tension: the mechanical elements become part of the aesthetic. This hybrid of fine art painting and sculptural installation transforms the work into an object of presence and dimensionality.
Authenticity
This work is a unique, one-of-a-kind original, signed by the artist. It is shipped disassembled — the frame components and suspended canvas are packed in a protective tube to ensure delivery without damage. Upon receipt, a professional framer can re-assemble the suspended frame for installation. A Certificate of Authenticity (COA), signed by the artist, accompanies the piece. This document includes the artist’s name, title of the work, dimensions, medium, and unique identifier — ensuring verifiable provenance and collector confidence.
Artist Background
Michael John Valentine brings over 55 years of artistic experience to this work. He began formal art training as a child at age 10 in Ohio, and went on to receive a Bachelor’s degree in Fine and Professional Arts from Kent State University. His practice blends photography and mixed-media acrylic painting; often, his process begins with layered photographic imagery drawn from his travels, which he then transforms into dynamic abstract compositions through multiple layers of paint, glazing, glazing, and textural manipulation — culminating in works that traverse both the photographic and the painterly.
His technique often includes palette-knife strokes, splatter, layering, and glazing. In this series — including Today in Red — the work is more than painting; it is a synthesis of painting, sculpture, and installation. The suspended framing further elevates the work from a traditional canvas to a curated statement piece.
As for signature credentials: the piece comes with a COA and is one-of-a-kind; the framed “floating” format makes it installer-ready (upon framing assembly), perfect for a collector seeking a premium, ready-to-present centerpiece.
