Within every life there are moments that remain long after they have passed. Some are bright and unforgettable. Others are quiet, hidden, and deeply personal. We often celebrate the highlights—the victories, the milestones, the moments captured in photographs—but it is the shadows that often shape us most.
Shadows Remember is an exploration of those unseen experiences.
The second work in my Between the Black and the White collection, this abstract painting moves beyond the contrast of two opposing colors and explores the emotional landscape created between them. Black and white are not simply visual elements. They are memories, emotions, and reflections of the journey each person carries.
Black represents the chapters we rarely share—the challenges, the lessons, the moments that tested our strength. White represents the clarity that follows—the understanding, hope, and new beginnings that emerge from those experiences.
Together, they create something much more meaningful than contrast.
They create a story.
Throughout my career as an artist, I have learned that every painting carries a history. The canvas remembers every decision, every layer, every moment of hesitation and confidence. The same is true of people. We are all collections of experiences. The past remains with us, not as something that holds us back, but as something that gives depth and meaning to who we become.
That idea became the foundation of Shadows Remember.
This work was created with the belief that what is hidden can be just as powerful as what is revealed. The darker passages of the painting are not meant to represent emptiness or absence. They represent depth. They represent the places where memories are stored and where personal stories quietly exist.
The lighter areas are not simply moments of brightness. They represent discovery—the moments when understanding arrives, when experiences begin to make sense, and when the past becomes part of a larger picture.
Abstract art gives us the freedom to experience a painting rather than simply observe it.
There is no single correct interpretation.
One collector may see a landscape formed from memories. Another may see movement, architecture, music, or emotion. Someone else may simply feel a connection to a particular moment in their own life.
That personal connection is what gives abstract art its power.
A realistic painting can show you what the artist saw.
An abstract painting allows you to discover what you see.
Shadows Remember invites the viewer to slow down and look deeper. The longer you spend with the painting, the more it reveals. Shapes emerge. Textures change. New relationships between light and dark become visible. Like memories themselves, the painting continues to evolve depending on the moment and the person experiencing it.
In today’s world, we are surrounded by constant movement and endless distractions. We often move too quickly to reflect on where we have been and what has shaped us.
This piece is an invitation to pause.
It is a reminder that every experience matters.
The difficult moments.
The quiet moments.
The moments we thought would define us but eventually became lessons.
Our shadows are not something to erase. They are evidence of the journey.
They remind us that growth comes from experience, and wisdom comes from the combination of everything we have lived through.
The beauty of black and white is that it removes the distractions of color and forces us to focus on emotion, composition, and meaning. Without color guiding the viewer, the conversation becomes more personal. The eye searches for balance. The mind searches for connection.
The painting becomes less about what is displayed and more about what is remembered.
As an artist with more than five decades of experience, I continue to believe that the most meaningful works are those that create a relationship between the artwork and the collector. A painting should not simply fill a space on a wall. It should become part of the environment, part of the conversation, and part of the story of the person who chooses to live with it.
Shadows Remember was created for that connection.
It is a reflection on the moments that have shaped us, the experiences that have strengthened us, and the memories that continue to influence who we are.
