Heart Of The Earth- 38 x 25 x 2.5 custom painted floating framed signed canvas
Original Mixed Media Abstract by Michael John Valentine
There are moments in life when we are reminded that the Earth is not simply the ground beneath our feet—it is alive with motion, memory, and immeasurable beauty. Heart Of The Earth is my interpretation of that realization: an abstract meditation on the rhythms of our planet and the hidden energy that lies beneath every landscape.
This work was born from a journey to the Dominican Republic, where I became fascinated by the dramatic shifts in color visible from the air, along the coastline, and across the mountainous terrain. Rich ochres blend with deep mineral blues. Warm rusts collide with layers of emerald, charcoal, and gold. The earth itself seemed to pulse with life, revealing stories millions of years in the making. I returned to my studio determined to capture not a specific place, but a feeling—the emotional center of our world.
Heart Of The Earth is a mixed media composition built through layers of photography, digital manipulation, acrylic overpainting, and glazing. The result is a work that feels simultaneously ancient and contemporary. The textures suggest geological formations, shifting tectonic plates, riverbeds seen from thousands of feet above, or perhaps the inner workings of memory itself. The painting does not dictate a single interpretation; instead, it invites the viewer to discover their own connection.
At first glance, the composition appears energetic and spontaneous. Yet beneath that movement lies careful balance. Sweeping forms move across the canvas like currents of molten stone, while subtle transitions of color create moments of calm and reflection. Areas of heavy texture contrast with smooth passages of glaze, producing a dynamic surface that changes with the light throughout the day.
The title, Heart Of The Earth, reflects my belief that nature possesses its own spirit—a quiet but persistent force that endures through every season, storm, and transformation. The painting is not about destruction or chaos. Rather, it celebrates resilience. It speaks to the cycles of renewal that shape our planet and, perhaps, our own lives.
This piece belongs to my larger Earth Series, a collection of seventeen works inspired by the elemental beauty of our world. Each painting explores a different aspect of the Earth’s personality: its strength, fragility, mystery, and infinite capacity for change. Together, the series forms an ongoing conversation about our relationship with the natural world and the emotions it evokes.
As with all of my original canvases, Heart Of The Earth undergoes a multi-step process in my Cornelius, North Carolina studio. The artwork begins as an original image and evolves through layers of acrylic paint applied directly by hand. Select areas are overpainted to add depth and texture, creating subtle relief across the surface. Finally, the canvas is sealed with a protective glaze that enhances color saturation and preserves the work for generations.
For me, art is most successful when it creates a moment of pause. I want viewers to stand before Heart Of The Earth and feel something they cannot immediately explain. Perhaps they see continents drifting across centuries. Perhaps they recall a journey, a memory, or a dream. Perhaps they simply feel the quiet power of nature moving beneath the surface.
After more than fifty-five years of creating art, I remain captivated by the same question that inspired me as a child: How do we capture wonder?
Heart Of The Earth is my answer.
This is not a painting of a place.
It is a painting of connection.
A reminder that beneath our cities, our stories, and our daily lives, there remains something timeless—a living, breathing heart that belongs to us all.
